A quiet likeness held against a near-black ground

Painted the other way round from a sketch: the ground goes down almost black first, then the light is added back in. The line is doubled — a red contour running just outside a dark one — so the face lifts off the background instead of sitting in it, and the mint and teal of the scarf carry through the skin as reflected colour.
